Pattern Blocks

Pattern Wizardry is a hands-on, interactive, object-based fantasy environment designed to introduce children to the fundamental patterns that are the building blocks of our natural and manmade world. While visiting the exhibition, children become pattern wizards who investigate, explore and create the world’s essential patterns.

The human mind searches for pattern. The recognition of patterns is at the heart of artistic creation, scientific investigation, mathematical calculation and communication. The first step to understanding our world is to SEE patterns clearly. With playful open-ended activities focusing on spiral, branch, tessellation, and linear patterns, Pattern Wizardry incorporates a range of beautiful and evocative works of art, artifacts and natural specimens that underscore the links between the artistic and scientific contexts of patterns.

In the exhibition, visitors get the opportunity to create glowing tessellations from tiles on a light box, use wands to play rhythmic beats and compose musical patterns, use a stamp to create block print designs based on Javanese and Indian fabrics, create electronic patterns using virtual borders, quilts and kaleidoscopes and more.
